Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella? Dissolving The Double Chin

Erasing extra fat with an injection sounds like a dream come true. Kybella is just that!  The Kybella procedure aims to melt away the layer of fat that forms under the chin and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for the reduction of submental fullness, or double chin, in men and women. It is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. The active ingredient is a man-made formulation of deoxycholic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in the human body.

People need 2-5 treatments for optimal results.

How does Kybella work?

One of our aesthetic nurses will create a tailored treatment plan based on your chin profile. At each treatment, you will be given multiple small injections under your chin with an ultra-fine needle. We will schedule future appointments eight weeks apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2-4 KYBELLA® treatments.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Please stop any blood thinning medications like Advil, Aleve, Motrin, or Ibuprofen along with flaxseed supplements, and fish oils, St. John’s Wart for seven days prior to your treatment. We do our very best to inject in a way that minimizes bruising, however, we cannot guarantee that you will not bruise. Stopping these medications will help. If you have any type of active open breakouts where we are injecting, we cannot treat you and will reschedule once the area has healed.

What can I expect during Kybella treatment?

The nurse will take before and after photos, clean the area and then mark under your chin to help her with her injection mapping. People will need 20-50 injections depending on the size of the area we are treating under the chin.

Kybella is sold in vials and we tell everyone to budget for at least two vials on their first visit. Not all chins are the same so if you need a third or fourth vial, we will work with you to get the best pricing possible. It is important to keep in mind that people will need more than one treatment. Most patients need 2-3 treatments scheduled eight weeks apart to achieve their desired results. People with a large double chin will require additional vials and treatments.

The injection itself resembles a stinging sensation. We will give you ice to help with the swelling but know that you will swell after your treatment. The area will be red and slightly numb. This is normal.  Over the next 3-7 days, your chin will swell. This means you had a great treatment as your body is starting to metabolize the dead fat cells. We advise that you prepare for this. You do not need to stay inside, but know that you will be swollen and may not want to plan any major social events 4-5 days post-treatment.

We will schedule you back for your next appointment eight weeks after your first treatment. During the second visit, we will repeat what we did the first time. We have found that people do not swell as much after subsequent visits.

What is post-care like?

Avoid strenuous exercise and give your body 24 hours to settle and the swelling to calm. Don’t be alarmed if it looks worse before it looks better. You can get the treated area wet, so washing and swimming is not an issue. Men can shave the area the next day, just be gentle. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the spa.
