When it comes to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is the name most people recognize but did you know there are even more options to choose from? Another FDA-approved neurotoxin that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and be used preventatively in younger patients. I’m going to break down the key differences between the two and help you decide which one is best for you.

How Botox and Dysport Work

Both Botox and Dysport belong to a category of injectables called neuromodulators. They’re made from botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks the signal between nerves and muscles. When this happens, the muscle relaxes, and the overlying skin looks smoother.

There’s a common misconception that the goal of Botox is to get rid of all facial movement and emotions. While some injectors may over-treat areas and cause this, that is never the goal. Our CANS (Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist) certified injectors are always treating with the goal of helping soften the repetitive movements in the face that over time cause or deepen fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Key Differences Between Botox and Dysport

While Botox and Dysport work in the same way, there are a few subtle differences:

  • Spread: Dysport tends to spread a little more after injection. This makes it useful for treating larger areas like the forehead with fewer injection points whereas Botox stays more localized, which can be better for precise areas such as crow’s feet.
  • Onset of results: Dysport may start working a little faster, with some patients seeing changes in as little as 2–3 days. Botox typically takes 3–5 days to begin showing results.
  • Units and dosing: The number of units used for Dysport is measured differently than Botox. This means your Dysport treatment may call for a higher unit number, but that doesn’t mean you’re getting “more” product, it’s just a different measurement system.
  • Longevity: Both treatments last about 3–4 months on average. Some patients feel one lasts a little longer for them, but this varies from person to person.

Benefits of Both Treatments

Whether you choose Botox or Dysport, you can expect several benefits:

  • Quick appointments: Treatments usually take only 10–20 minutes.
  • No downtime: You can return to work, errands, or social plans right after your visit.
  • Customizable results: Your provider can adjust your treatment to match your goals, whether you want subtle softening or more dramatic smoothing.
  • Preventative care: Consistent treatments can help slow the formation of deeper lines in the future.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There isn’t a universal “better” choice, both Botox and Dysport are excellent options. The best treatment for you depends on your goals, the areas being treated, and how your body responds. Some patients even try both over time to see which one they prefer.

The most important step is scheduling a consultation with an experienced injector. At Flawless, we’ll talk through your goals, explain your options, and recommend a personalized treatment plan. Whether you choose Botox or Dysport, our focus is always on creating natural results that help you feel confident and refreshed.
