Fade That Frustrating Melasma

Melasma is a frustrating pigmentation problem that causes brown patches, often in a mask-like pattern, on your face and neck. Because melasma can be challenging to treat, we recommend a free consultation with one of our Aesthetic Nurses prior to any treatments. Flawless Med Spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, offers a variety of treatment options including PicoSure laser facials, chemical peels and skincare. For an effective customized melasma solution, book your appointment online or by phone today.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a complicated skin condition that shows up as brown-tinted patches of skin on the forehead, cheeks, jawline, upper lip and/or neck. Melasma is different from sun damage in that the pigment is usually “triggered” by hormones, genetics and/or the sun. It is not uncommon to have it appear with pregnancy, oral contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapy. In simple terms, some of the cells in your body have gone rogue and are producing excess pigment. Once these cells start to produce pigment, it is hard to turn them off.  The good news is that there are many options to help quiet them down and lighten your skin.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Melasma?

Melasma is an ongoing condition which means patients will need to manage their skin on an ongoing basis. Wearing a medical-grade sunscreen, like Elta MD and using a brightening product by Jan Marini or SkinCeuticals is critical. The sun is a trigger for your body to create melanin and melanin is what causes those darker patches.

Flawless is the first Med Spa in New Mexico to offer Pico Laser treatments for Melasma. Think of the Pico Laser as the “Fast Track” to breaking up that pigment and building new collagen. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has studied this laser and research has concluded that it is an optimal laser for treating melasma. Many people will combine Pico laser treatments with Chemical peels for optimal results.

Additionally, we use melasma treatment options like:

  • Chemical Peels
  • Facials
  • At-home skincare
  • And more!

Is There Any Downtime?

There’s usually no downtime associated with our anti-aging cosmetic injections. However, there is always a possibility of bruising and your skin may feel tender at the injection site for a few days.
